Standing Up for Fairness, Opportunity, and Certainty
It was a full and productive week in Parliament, and I was proud to continue standing up for the people of Richmond Centre–Marpole and all Canadians.
Many individuals looking to upgrade their skills or retrain for new careers rely on private training institutions—simply because public options cannot meet the demand. Yet the government has denied student grants to those attending qualified private institutions. This is not only unfair, it undermines people who are working hard to better themselves and contribute to our workforce. I raised this issue in the House, and Conservatives called on the Liberal government to reverse this policy. Unfortunately, they chose to vote it down.
I also want to highlight an important opportunity for young people in our community. The Canada Summer Jobs program is now open, offering valuable work experience, income, and a chance to build skills for the future. I strongly encourage students and young job seekers in Richmond Centre–Marpole to apply and take advantage of this opportunity—it could be a meaningful first step toward their career.
Thursday was a very special day. I am truly honoured and excited to have been appointed Chair of the Conservative Pacific Gateway Economic Engagement Caucus. This is an important opportunity to strengthen Canada’s engagement across the Asia-Pacific region. I look forward to working closely with colleagues and stakeholders in the weeks ahead to advance this work.
On Friday, I pressed the government once again on a critical issue: whether it will withdraw its instructions to lawyers not to defend private property rights in the Cowichan case. Canadians deserve clarity and confidence in the security of their homes. I will keep asking this question—clearly and persistently—until we get a real answer.
I was also very pleased to meet with firefighters from Richmond on Parliament Hill. Their courage, professionalism, and commitment to protecting our community are deeply appreciated. They represent the very best of public service.
Finally, I had the pleasure of attending the Vaisakhi celebration on the Hill alongside the Leader and many colleagues. It was a vibrant and meaningful event, celebrating the rich heritage, resilience, and contributions of the Sikh community to Canada.
