Housing, Iran Conflict, Religious Freedom

It has been an intense week in Parliament.

On housing, I questioned again the government’s plan to create yet another federal housing agency when multiple agencies and programs are already responsible for housing supply and affordability. Instead of adding another layer of bureaucracy, Canadians deserve to know why existing institutions are not delivering results.

On the Iran conflict, the federal government’s messaging shifted several times — initially expressing support for allies, then regret over the escalation, and later calling for de-escalation. The government subsequently said it would not rule out Canadian military involvement before later clarifying its position.

At the same time, a military facility in the Middle East where Canadian personnel were present was struck during Iranian missile attacks. Canadians only learned about this after the media asked questions, creating serious concerns about transparency. When Canadian forces are deployed in dangerous regions, Canadians deserve to be informed.

On Bill C-9, the government forced a motion to limit debate and rushed the bill through the Justice Committee. The bill — which has drawn concerns from faith leaders and civil liberties advocates — is expected to return to the House on March 23 for report and third reading.

On Thursday, hundreds gathered on Parliament Hill to defend religious freedom and freedom of expression. This week I also presented three more petitions in the House calling for the protection of religious freedom.

It was also a real pleasure to welcome a couple visiting from Richmond to Parliament — I am always delighted to see constituents from our community here in Ottawa and to share with them the work taking place in the House of Commons.

I will continue working to uphold transparency, accountability, and the fundamental freedoms Canadians cherish.
