Protecting Private Property Right –

This week, much of my work in Parliament focused on one issue: protecting private property rights and restoring certainty for Canadians.

I rose in the House for three consecutive days to question the Liberal government’s response to the Cowichan ruling. I raised concerns about the Liberals’ eight months of silence before the Prime Minister finally spoke — yet even then, Canadians were given only vague and unclear answers.

I also challenged the government for denying the real consequences of the ruling, ignoring the City of Richmond’s calls for clarification, and instructing federal lawyers to abandon the defence of private property rights in litigation involving Aboriginal title claims.

That directive remains on the government’s website today. Canadians can only assume the Liberals still stand by it.

On Thursday, Conservatives introduced a motion calling on the government to:

• replace Litigation Guideline #14 with a directive to strongly defend private property rights;

• publish a plan within 30 days to protect property rights affected by the Cowichan ruling and Musqueam agreement; and

• establish a special parliamentary committee to study legal and constitutional measures to protect private property rights in Canada.

This should not be a partisan issue. It is about restoring confidence and certainty — both of which are essential to our economic system.

Financial Update and Sovereign Wealth Fund –

Earlier in the week, Conservatives also moved a motion in response to the government’s financial update and proposed sovereign wealth fund. Unfortunately, the motion was defeated.

Canadians are increasingly concerned about rising debt, inflation, and the growing cost of living. More debt today means more pressure on future generations tomorrow.

Shoplifting Crisis –

On Friday, I also raised concerns about another growing crisis: shoplifting.

Retail theft is no longer a petty crime. Annual losses are now estimated at $9.2 billion across Canada — roughly one and a half times the amount collected through the GST. Repeat offenders and “catch-and-release” policies are contributing to the problem, while businesses, workers, and consumers pay the price.

I called on the government to take immediate action before the situation worsens further.

Community Events –

Back in the community, I was pleased to attend Mother’s Day celebrations hosted by Anxin Community Savings and Buddha’s Light International Association. It was wonderful to join residents in recognizing and celebrating the love, sacrifice, and contributions of mothers in our community.
